An illegitimate young girl is misdiagnosed, and kept in a mental institution for 81 years. Her well-meaning psychologist, who is lured by fame and wealthy socialite contributors, tries to fix all the problems of US society, but he and his successors are pulled down a slippery slope toward fascism.
