Often the victims of terrible romance premises, that while a tragedy, doesn’t matter because Wers are creatures of lore. They don’t exist. Who really cares how they’re portrayed in media?
That has been Darlene Coopersmith’s sentiment for all her 21 years. She’s more into history, and she knows all too-well about the real—human—monsters out there. On top of trying to keep a job and get through college, Darlene has more than enough on her mind to bother with fiction.
Her convictions are tested when she discovers she isn’t feeling like shit because she’s sick. It isn’t her looming depression over losing another job. It isn’t even her fear that her mom will turn her out onto the streets.
Nope. Darlene has started the Change—the process in which Wers shift between forms. Turns out, Wers very much exist, and she’s one of them. In her case, she’s a Wer-lynx. Points for being one of the rarer Wers.
To make matters more confusing and rage-inducing, Darlene’s older sister Mariah and best friend Walker have known what she is. Had she not begun to Change, she doesn’t know how long they would have kept her in the dark.
Worse yet, Darlene knows there’s more Mariah and Walker are keeping from her. She could never guess, though, that their secrets involve Wer rebels fighting against a shady organization set on the annihilation of all Wers, or that the leader of those rebels is more than comfortable using Darlene for her selfish revenge. She couldn’t imagine that because of her loved ones’ secrets, her entire world would collapse around her in less than a week.
“Wer” is the gut-punching, action-filled adventure of a young woman battling through unbelievable odds while coming to grips with a reality she never thought possible. How sane will she be by the end of it?
