I was born in the UK but raised in Hong Kong and for the last few decades have lived in New Zealand. My interest in writing began at fourteen while travelling by sea from Brisbane to Lisbon. I broke my wrist two weeks before we set sail, so spent the entire voyage in the ship’s library writing a nautical adventure. Two years later while touring across Germany, I read John Steinbeck’s Journal of a Novel and decided I wanted to be a writer.
Learning the craft took an inordinately long time, and I’m still not done. While I honed my skills, I ran a record shop, worked as a DJ, and sold IT. I moved out of the city several years ago and bought a small block of land at the top of the South Island, which my wife and I share with seven alpacas, three donkeys, and two dogs. I now spend my days writing.
