When the captain throws out her fishing line, what will a Big Blue Boat see? A story within a story, rhythm, rhyme, and repetition introduces life forms found in the Indian Ocean, while the imaging hints at the cycle of life.
A Big Blue Boat Is Out On The Brine
My Submission

A Big Blue Boat is out on the brine,

And who do you think she sees?

A Captain so brave, who sails on the wave,

That’s who the Blue Boat sees.

A Captain brave is out on the brine,

And who do you think she sees?

A bird big and white, who flies with delight,

That’s who the Captain sees.

A bird big and white, is out on the brine,

And who do you think she sees?

A squid long and shy, who peeks at the sky,

That’s who the white bird sees.

A squid long and shy is out on the brine,

And who do you think she sees?

I loved the cyclical nature of this story within a story; supported by imagery the concept will be more fully realized. This is the kind of picture book that becomes a favorite, read over and over again. As I lost myself in the prose, I imagined the final image revealing that the squid has in fact spotted the reader, who is now drawn into the story. Lovely!
