Genét Simone has been a teacher and teacher educator for over thirty years. Her experiences in Shishmaref, Alaska, upon which "Teaching in the Dark" is based, spearheaded her lifelong quest to understand the emotional and spiritual aspects of teaching. What goes on behind the scenes of a teacher's life? What draws people into the profession? What pushes them out or keeps them there? "Teaching in the Dark" leads the reader through that complex landscape. Her stories will make you laugh and likely have you shedding a tear, too. Teaching is a demanding profession, filled with all kinds of unexpected twists and turns. But it's also an enormously satisfying profession -- a perspective that Dr. Simone portrays bravely and eloquently. Simone is still teaching high school students in Seattle, Washington, where she lives with her wife (also a veteran teacher). When not outdoors and enjoying the Pacific Northwest mountains and waterways, Genét is researching and writing. Her next book to be published in late 2025 will be a series of essays about why teachers STAY in their profession, in spite of the enormous challenges of the 21st century. The title? "Teaching in the Light."
