Karen Newman is judging the 2023 Page Turner Screenplay Award for screenwriters who want to get their screenplays in front of film producers who are looking for scripts to option and produce.
Karen is an award-winning producer from the UK who moved into producing following a highly successful career in Global Events Management in the City of London. Her former training as an actor, combined with her exceptional organizational skills and financial acumen, make her an outstanding Creative Producer.
Her debut feature film, Just Charlie, has achieved critical acclaim worldwide and won many awards, including the prestigious Audience Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and, most recently, the Grand Prix in the Ecran Juniors in Cannes 2019. It has been sold to many territories internationally, including Amazon in the USA and, most recently, to SKY cinema in the UK.
Hidden Door Productions has produced several privately financed short films, including “Lady M” starring Samantha Bond and Eleanor Bron, “Bertie” starring Alison Steadman and Arthur Darvill, "Down" starring Amanda Donohoe and Paul Barber, The Outing starring Con O'Neill, Julie Hesmondhalgh and Elizabeth Rider and The Man at The Bottom of the Garden starring Clare Calbraith, Denise Black, and Paul Bradley. These films have done exceptionally well at festivals, been BAFTA long-listed, and secured distribution deals.
Karen is president of the Timothy Welling Bursary, an award and mentoring scheme with E15 Drama School designed to support and nurture students in their final year of training.
Karen is producing several projects and has just completed her second feature film, “Love Without Walls," Written and Directed by Jane Gull (My Feral Heart), Starring Shana Swash, Niall McNamee, Adam Deacon, Paul Barber, and Sheila Reid. Karen lives in Hertfordshire with her crazy but loveable black Labrador, Maisy, and a much-loved 2CV called Patrick. #2CVPatrick
In January 2022, Karen was selected as a participant in Creative UK's Market Trader Programme, and in June 2022, she was one of only 5 participants selected to attend The Audience Design lab in Vienna in association with Creative Europe and The International Screen Institute Karen is a member of BAFTA Connect, Equity, BECTU, WFTV, Zurich Film Festival Master Class 2017, Cannes Producers Network 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.
