Barri Evins ~ Screenplay Award Judge

Working film producer and former industry executive with decades of experience, Barri Evins is judging the Screenplay Award in the hope of finding new screenwriting talent.

A working film producer with decades of industry experience, Barri Evins has sold specs, pitches, articles, and books to all the major studios. She leverages this expertise as a script and story consultant, nurturing writers and giving them essential tools to navigate the industry and bring their stories to the screen.

Before launching her own company, Barri worked her way up from agency assistant through the executive ranks, beginning with writer/producers/director Bruce Evans & Ray Gideon (STARMAN, STAND BY ME, MR. BROOKS), based at Universal Studios, where she set up her first features. As President of Debra Hill Productions (HALLOWEEN, THE FISHER KING), she built a dynamic slate, packaging, setting up, and developing projects at studios and streamers including Warner Bros., Universal, Disney, Nickelodeon, New Line, and HBO.

Barri is known for spotting up-and-coming voices and captivating ideas. Career highlights include discovering and setting up ASSASSINS, the first film by the Wachowskis (THE MATRIX), directed by Richard Donner, starring Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas, with Evans & Gideon producing. She set up David Berenbaum’s first project, CHRISTMAS IN NEW JERSEY—before Elf was a twinkle in his eye. Barri has worked extensively with A-list talent, including actor-producer Tobey Maguire, directors Shawn Levy (DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, STRANGER THINGS) and Frank Oz (BOWFINGER, WHAT ABOUT BOB?), and Oscar–nominated writers Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby (CHILDREN OF ME, IRON MAN,, THE EXPANSE).

As a writer, Barri co-wrote original treatments. MEET JOHN DOE sold in a preemptive six-figure deal to Warner Bros., and UNIDENTIFIED SUBURBAN OBJECT sold to Fox Family.

As a consultant, Barri provides screenwriters, TV writers, and novelists experienced, constructive and honest feedback. One-on-one sessions foster collaboration and spark story insights. Consultations, seminars, and mentorship offer personalized guidance and insider strategies to elevate stories, advance them in the marketplace and break into the industry.

Barri taught at the UCLA Graduate Producers Program and AFI. She crafted custom story courses for execs and teams—recommended by studios to studios—at Pixar, DreamWorks Animation, and Blizzard Entertainment. She has spoken at writing conferences and for writers’ organizations nationwide.

A Contributing Senior Editor at ScriptMag, Barri’s column, "Breaking & Entering," has run since 2012. She is a WRITERS' DIGEST contributor, and wrote a chapter for the popular NOW WRITE!! series. Her book, CREATING DELICIOUS STORIES, is in the works.
