Cal McGhee

I am an Irish LGBT author/screenwriter and full-time development assistant with over 7 years experience in the film and TV industry. I live for writing genre; mainly psychological thrillers, metaphorical horror, and grounded sc-fi, but am also drawn to comedy and gritty kitchen sink drama.

Ryan Murphy, Joss Whedon, David Chase, Alan Ball, Russell T Davies, Andrea Arnold and Charlie Brooker all heavily inspire me. Conceptually rich, offbeat films such as 'Being John Malkovich', and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' have also been highly influential in my writing. My own taste is pure 'guilty pleasure', skirting the camp and melodrama of classic primetime soap operas such as 'Dallas', 'Dynasty', 'Melrose Place' and absolutely anything from the 80s...

In my spare time, I continue to write scripts and teach screenwriting to Transition Year students as part of the Creative Engagement Scheme. When not writing, I am editing existing scripts, reading new ones, or daydreaming about plot mechanics until I can type it all out.

I received my MA in Film & Television from Dublin City University while assisting on set for many independent films and high-profile TV series. While working at a post-production company, I wrote and directed my first short film 'Keep Out of Reach of Children', and am now developing a second, to be directed by a longtime collaborator.

Writing has been a part of me since early childhood, and I have devoted the last 20 years to honing the craft and finding my creative voice. Currently, my goal is to 'polish' the countless scripts and projects that I have been developing sporadically for years to curate a body of work that fully reflects my range. While I am interested in directing in the distant future, there is more of that realm I wish to learn before trying my hand at it a second time. However, screenwriting is my one true passion and an avenue I am determined to explore now, after years of learning from the best and reading 1000s of scripts over the years in a professional capacity.

I have dedicated my entire career to perfecting my own understanding of what makes for a captivating read. Not only do I want to entertain and excite viewers, but I also want to reflect contemporary societal issues and thought-provoking aspects of the human condition through my work. Most importantly, I want my work to resonate and reach people on an international level through universal themes, clearly drawn characters, and impactful moments that leave a long-lasting mark.
