I grew up in Chester, England. I studied English at Cambridge. After that I worked at a variety of jobs before I went to teach English in Istanbul, Turkey. This calling led me to Saudi Arabia, where my arrest and detention made a strong impression in me and supplied some material for my first novel, We're Happy. After that I taught in Brunei and Switzerland before retiring and returning to Chester with my wife and son.
My novels are thrillers or crime novels with an international background but mainly set in the city of 'Westchester'. They concern themselves with the problems of understanding or misunderstanding in a shrinking world. There is intrigue and suspense in these books, but also humour, not that of a wisecracking narrator but that which arises from the situation and outlooks of the characters, a droll humour but also one redolent of what Wordsworth called 'the still, sad music of humanity'.
