Sherri Matthews

My debut memoir is a true love story for these fractured, dangerous times, of shattered dreams, raw faith and the kindness of strangers. It chronicles my experiences and perspective as a British woman, mother and homesick "Resident Alien", raising my three dual-citizen children through 90s California, trapped in a rebound marriage to my husband's best friend - my first husband, who died at twenty-one. A dual timeline interweaves a physical and metaphorical fault line, exploring the ties that bind, a mother's fierce love and the price of freedom. This memoir is my love letter to a young American airman who didn't get a second chance, and to "my" California. Always home, forever homesick.

My work has appeared in various magazines, anthologies and online, and was shortlisted for the Fish Publishing Short Memoir Prize and Letter Review Prize. I was also a previous finalist for the Page Turner Awards. For twenty years, I was a British “mom” in California. Today I live with my husband and son in Somerset, shepherded by two little black cats while recovering from the recent loss of my mum, my number one fan.
