Why Did the Chameleon Cross the Road?

By Catherine Kreutter

Page 1

In a big tree, on the side of a busy road in Uganda, a chameleon sat eating his breakfast.

He was also thinking about his next move.

Read on, and guess what chameleon sees next.

Page 2

This tree has been perfect.

It has been quiet, the food has been good, and no one has seen me…

Page 3

…until now!

Oh no, what is this?

What is that?

I change my mind.

This place is scary.

Page 4

It is time to go!

I need to get back to my tree across the road.

I don’t want to be late.

GOAL

Page 5

The road is wide to cross.

It looks hot.

I will be out in the open.

I think I can do it!

I am small and slow.

Those cars are big and fast.

I can make it one step at a time.

I CAN do it!

Page 6

I remember my Dad always said:

“To reach your goal, you need a plan.”

My plan:

Tell myself I can do it

Climb down the tree

On road, look both ways

Focus, one step at a time

Get to the middle white line

Get to the other side

I did it!

Page 7

Here I go!

Look left and look right.

Eat a fly.

Set one foot in front of the other.

Small steps get you to your goal.

Page 8

Watch out chameleon! Move over!

Yikes! I am finished!

Page 9

“I have to get this matooke to the market!”

Whew, that was close.

Page 10

I won’t let that stop me!

My plan:

·Tell myself I can do it

·Climb down the tree

·On road, look both ways

Focus, one step at a time

Get to the middle white line

Get to the other side

I did it!

Seeing the text and illustrations working side by side makes all the difference. It really has everything for the young reader, no matter which country they're in. A great lesson when starting out in life with lots of interesting facts thrown in for good measure. All the best for the future.

The story and illustrations work beautifully together to create an engaging reading experience for children. The plot is simple, warm, and enjoyable, while the illustrations add charm and help bring the scenes to life.
