Well-written overall with a clear and interesting premise. I was a bit distracted by the excessive use of the '- -' device as a pause and would suggest an alternative. By the end of the excerpt, it's quite obvious where the story is heading but there is a sense of too much going on too soon. Slow down the pace and focus on establishing the main characters, the conflict and obstacles etc.
